Skin Cancer Treatments

Once skin cancer has been formally diagnosed through a biopsy and laboratory analysis, your skin doctor will give you options best suited to your diagnosis. We understand a diagnosis can be scary, but with modern treatments like the ones we have today, you are in the best care. Below are some of the skin cancer treatments we offer:

Shave Excision

This simple procedure can be used for protruding skin lesions. Local anaesthetic is used to numb the site, and your doctor will carefully remove the lesion at the surface level. It's quick and offers minimal discomfort with a fast recovery time. Generally, you can return to office-based or non-strenuous work on the same day as the procedure.

Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy involves freezing off the skin cancer or lesion with liquid nitrogen. This treatment causes the lesion to scab and eventually fall off. It is mostly used for pre-cancerous conditions or very early-stage skin cancers. It is a fast treatment that doesn't require local anaesthetic, and you can generally return to your normal daily activities afterwards.

Photodynamic Therapy

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is a two-step treatment where a light-sensitive cream is applied to the lesion, followed by exposure to a special light that activates the cream. This process destroys cancer cells with minimal harm to surrounding healthy tissue and is used for certain types of skin cancer and pre-cancerous growths.

Curettage

Similar to a shave excision, a curettage involves a local anaesthetic to numb the lesion, and then it is removed by gently scraping it off with a curette (a small, scoop-like tool). It's commonly followed by electrosurgery to address any remaining cancer cells. There is minimal downtime, and you can generally return to work after the procedure.

Excisional Surgery

Excisional surgery (also known as a Wide Local Excision) involves removing the lesion and a clear margin of healthy skin around it. This method is a common skin cancer procedure for malignant (cancerous) lesions to ensure the cancer is completely removed. It's more extensive than shave or punch excisions and requires a slightly longer recovery.

Punch Excision

This technique uses a punch tool, much like a tiny cookie-cutter, to remove a full-thickness piece of skin, encompassing all layers from the surface to the fat beneath. It's ideal for small and well-defined lesions. Punch excisions offer minimal downtime and a fast recovery. Local anaesthetic is used to numb the excision site.

Topical Treatments

In some cases, prescription topical treatments, such as Aldara or Efudix, can be used on field-damage sites or pre-cancerous skin. They involve applying a cream directly onto the cancerous sites and are usually suitable for superficial skin lesions. Depending on your doctor's recommended treatment course, you may need to apply it over some days or weeks.

Treatment for Skin Cancer on The Face

What is Mohs Surgery?

Mohs surgery is the gold-standard skin cancer surgery for the face, neck, head, or other difficult areas. It is a more invasive surgery that's used when necessary. When performed by a qualified Mohs surgeon, layers of the lesion are removed once at a time and then examined under a microscope. It continues until all cancerous cells are gone, preserving as much healthy skin as possible.

By preserving surrounding skin, Mohs surgery can offer exceptional cosmetic results with a high cure rate. After a Mohs surgery or any of our procedures, we offer a range of cosmetic treatments to help minimise scarring and give you the best cosmetic results.

Your Questions Answered

How is skin cancer diagnosed?

A doctor can diagnose skin cancer using a combination of methods. First, they typically perform a visual examination of the skin with a dermatoscope to detect any abnormal growths or changes on the skin or existing moles. If any skin is suspicious, a skin biopsy may be used to collect a sample of the suspicious tissue for further analysis under a microscope for an official pathological diagnosis.

What are the common treatments for skin cancer?

Depending on the type and stage of skin cancer, the most common treatment is a removal procedure. This can involve an excisional surgery such as a Wide Local Excision or Mohs surgery. Everyone’s skin is different, and one treatment may not be as suitable as another. If you need a skin cancer treatment, discuss with your doctor the best options for you.

How often should I get a skin check?

Regular annual skin checks are an excellent way to ensure early skin cancer detection. If you have a family history of skin cancer or you’ve had a previous cancerous lesion, you may be advised to have a skin check every three or six months. Of course, if you notice any skin changes or are concerned about a particular lesion, you can book a skin check appointment sooner.
